What is Custom Build?
Custom build is a relatively new term in the UK self build industry. Local councils are under government pressure to provide self build opportunities as part of their local planning strategy. Some councils have teamed up with facilitators to provide ‘custom-build’ opportunities on land especially allocated for that purpose. This means that sections of development land are earmarked for self build, and buyers work with a specialist developer. This can be an even more hands-off approach on the part of the buyer, and can even see the developer arrange finance as well as everything else.
In some cases developers have a limited range of house designs, allowing the buyer to customise the interiors, but some developers offer a far more inclusive design process allowing the buyer to be more involved with the design from the outset.
